NGO/DPI Executive Committee's Youth Subcommittee Seeks Youth Council Members:

WHO: The Executive Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations Associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information (NGO/DPI Executive Committee). The Executive Committee acts as a liaison between the NGO community and DPI in connection with the provision of services, the production of materials, the use of UN facilities and all other matters that meet the information-related needs of NGOs associated with the UN.

WHAT: The NGO/DPI Executive Committee's Youth subcommittee is seeking two qualified Fordham students to join a selected group of students from other schools to help with planning youth events
related to the UN agenda during the 2011-2012 academic year. The first event to work on will take place in early Spring during the The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) conference. The CSW is a functional commission of the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and it is the principal global policy-making body dedicated to gender equality and advancement of women. If selected, you will help with planning a youth side event related to the theme of this conference. The theme of this year's CSW will be " The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges."

A Panel Discussion on “Sustainable and Inclusive Cities: The Right to the City” on November 17th

Fordham has been invited to a panel discussion on “Sustainable and Inclusive Cities: The Right to the City” at the United Nations on Thursday, 17 November from 5:30PM-8:30PM.

In 2008, for the first time, the world's population was evenly split between urban and rural areas, and 70 percent of the world population will be urban by 2050. To address “the Right to the city”, our panelists, from various backgrounds, will focus on urban development policies, legislation, human rights, housing and urban planning, design, and technological innovation.

The Panel discussion will mark the first anniversary of the launch of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and is presented in the context of the educational programme which accompanies the exhibition “Design With the Other 90%: Cities” currently on display at the UN. This event is organized in partnership with UN-HABITAT, the UN agency for human settlements, mandated to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. 1. Thank you for those who have already applied for the Impact Initiative Event Coordinator Assistant Position. We have extended the deadline for this position until Friday, October 28th at 5PM. This position requires that you attend Impact Events to help with the following: sign ins, group management, etc. It's a good way for you to see how Impact Initiative is run, so I suggest that you apply! We will have a very important Y.O.U.T.H. meeting this Tuesday, May 17th from 10:30AM to 1:00PM at the United Nations. This meeting will allow you to apply and schedule for our summer internship program at the United Nations.

We will be meeting with Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations and YOUTH Org. President, Hamid Al-Bayati, who will inform us of the progress of the organization and summer internship opportunities (which are on a first come, first served basis--see below for more details). Also, very importantly, we will be hearing from each of you--your information (school, UN experiences, etc), your input on YOUTH and what projects you'd like to see the organization work on.

A YOUTH Representative will meet you at the information desk at the United Nations at 10:30 AM (the latest) to ensure that you will be able get to the meeting location on time.

Interested in the United Nations? Iraqi Ambassador Hamid Al-Bayati has started an NGO JUST FOR YOU titled "Y.O.U.T.H"! Here's some more information:

Young Organizers United to Help (Y.O.U.T.H.) is a newly founded, youth-based, Non Governmental Organization dedicated to exposing young people to crucial humanitarian and public policy issues by bringing them closer to the United Nations community. Y.O.U.T.H. is the vision of Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati, Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations. Y.O.U.T.H. members are divided into teams, namely Committees, and are involved in developing their understanding of current vital global issues, through various programs, insightful events and meetings with prominent figures. Y.O.U.T.H. also provides internship opportunities to select students, while advancing their leadership skills through their involvement with Y.O.U.T.H. Current priority for our organization is the preparation for the UN Conference on Youth, in July 2011.

Through Y.O.U.T.H., universities will have Y.O.U.T.H. Leadership Teams. Each team will consist of one leader and 5 to 10 students thoroughly involved. Through these teams, members will be able to develop leadership skills through the following mechanisms:

Become better writers: write briefings, articles etc.
Become better communicators: Meet and speak with youth from different universities.
Develop reference letters for internship opportunities with the United Nations and non-governmental organizations.
Apply for internship and job opportunities in the United Nations, diplomatic missions to the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and other institutions.

What exactly is the MDG Village Exhibition? See the blurb that Kelly and I wrote up not too long ago:

Do you want to learn more about the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals? They are 8 goals the UN designed to eradicate poverty, achieve universal education, gender equality, maternal health and more! Come visit Fordham's Impact Initiative student group that designed this MDG Village Exhibition; our first on-campus event! At the exhibition we will have information about the MDGs: ways to get involved locally and also learn about the Impact Initiative - a UN interested student group. UNA EVENT: WASTE LAND

Last Tuesday, students from the University of Wisconsin, Impact Initiative (Fordham), NYU, and Columbia, watched the PHENOMENAL documentary, "Waste Land", screened by UNA (United Nations Association).

Filmed over nearly three years, Waste Land follows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from Brooklyn to his native Brazil--to the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an garbage pickers of recyclable materials. The film follows the "catadores" and depicts each of their life stories. Director Lucy Walker provides wonderful evidence of power of art and the collaboration of art and the human spirit.

The screening was followed by a post-screening discussion with special guests Victor Muniz, who appears in the film, and H.E. Amb. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations. During this time Muniz and the Ambassador decisively highlight, in their own way, the progress of the garbage dump, recycling, and the transformation of the "catadores" in Brazil.

It was a truly moving experience, everyone who watched the documentary was extremely emotionally moved. The documentary is a MUST SEE--inspiring in so many ways.

UNU Event with Jean-Marc Coicaud (Director) Briefing

On Tuesday, members from Impact Initiative (Fordham), University of Wisconsin, New York Univesity and Columbia attended a meeting with Jean-Marc Coicaud, Director of United Nations University (UNU).

Firstly, we all introduced ourselves: our names, our school, our focus of study (major etc). Mr. Coicaud was very interactive and willing to hear about us. After about a 20 minute interactive personal introduction, Mr. Coicaud introduced United Nations University to us, its history, how it functions, and its future prospects.

As of now, UNU functions as a think tank. Its headquarters are in Tokyo-with its agency focusing on global issues through teaching programs that, as of now, do not lead to degrees. Since 2009, those involved with UNU have been in the process of exploring the option of offering master's degrees and having PHd programs in the near future.

UNU, as Mr. Coicaud highlighted, focuses on three major objectives:
1. International Security
2. International Development
3. International Empowerment

UNU has chapters in many other countries such as: Japan, Malaysia, Finland, Iceland, Belgium, Germany, Venezuela, etc. Each chapter focuses on knowledge looking forward and outward not inward.

Mr. Coicaud focused on the importance of having academics thinking beyond the academic "tower": having their knowledge be applicable to areas other than academic: for example, for policy-making, think tanks, etc.

Mr. Coicaud spoke about three essential UN facts:
1. Public Communication
2. Statistics-putting together global policy data, the UN bases its statistics on national accounts, which can be an issue in regards to countries' statistical legitimacy.
3. Human Resources-diplomatic, etc.

Mr. Coicaud mentioned 4 ways to get involved with the UN
1. National Competative Exam
2. Associate Experts
3. Consultant-short term contracts (which can be renewed multiple times)
4. Internships

Mr. Coicaud stressed the importance of the necessity of not having a simply nationalized mind. Mr. Coicaud called this "frozen knowledge" The main objective of UNU is to not only know about each person's country of origin (historically, socially, politically etc.) but is to know about other countries and learn about other countries internationally.

Mr. Coicaud was a very honest presenter, highlighting the realistic outlooks of the UN. We were very thankful to have the opportunity to meet with him.

This is your chance to represent youth's voice about the MDGs. Let's make it powerful, touching and effective!

UN Trip Series
March 15-19
We will be attending various events at and concerning the United Nations with University of Wisconsin and Columbia. We will be visiting UN missions, take part in a service project and UN USA movie night with the Brazilian ambassador and attend a briefing. If you're interested in attending any or all of the aforementioned, please email me ASAP. Please note: you do not have to attend ALL of the events (but you're welcome to), you can attend whatever interests you most. Also, as time comes closer, we will be sure to give you more specific details regarding this series.

Meeting Summary (12/9 from 1:30-2:30)

The primary goal for December 9th’s meeting (from 1:30-2:30 McMahon Hall, Room 109) was to discuss on an on-campus MDG project for the Spring 2011 Semester in tandem with the Academic Initiative. First Kelly and I discussed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and handed out MDG packets. Then we distributed past on-campus project flyers help Impact Initiative members to brainstorm some ideas about the on-campus project. Then we created groups to gather ideas regarding how we envision educating Fordham colleagues about the MDGs. Some ideas were: a documentary series (each documentary pertaining to an MDG) and bringing the MDGs to the classroom. I can’t wait to further implement some of these ideas with you next meeting: THURSDAY JANUARY 27th 1:30 PM at MCMAHON HALL ROOM 109! I hope to see you there! Fordham, NYU and Columbia University come together for Impact Initiative charter event!!

November 15 2010, 55 students from Fordham's Impact Initiative along with New York University and Columbia University attended the United Nations University Middday Forum; the topic of discussion was "The Role of Entrepreneurship in the Attainment and Sustainability of MDGs." The conference started off with moderator, Jean-Marc Coicaud, Director of UN University's Office at the UN Headquarters in New York. Mr. Coicaud started the event with giving a general overview of the United Nations University, public event programmes in New York and background information about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Justin N. Seruhere, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Permanent Mission of the United Republic of Tanzania to the UN and speaker of the forum started the discussion by addressing two issues:
1. To reduce poverty by 2015
2. Humanitarian and other challenges

With respect to the first issue, Seruhere said that the main concern in 2010 is that resources are not evenly distributed. In regards to the second issue, Seruhere mentioned that there are humanitarian and other challenges in countries coming out of conflict. The problem with these issues are the commitment to MDGs and state's fragility. Seruhere focused on the development
of Tanzania regarding the MDGs. With a powerpoint presentation, he spoke of Tanzania's school system that has achieved 100 percent development as of 2009.

Seruhere mentioned three major frameworks that must be instituted in order for the MDGs to be achieved and for the development of Africa (specifically Tanzania).
1. Drugs
a. Malaria is a major killer of many people in sub-Saharan Africa
b. Malaria drugs, manufacturing of these drugs
2. Internal Entrepreneurship
a. Goods to help as many people as possible.
3. Utilitarianism
a. Internal and external benefits of the whole

I believe the conference was a major success in bringing students of a variety of schools, concentrations, majors and degrees to the UN. Students were able to participate in the question and answer session and open discussion during the event. They also were able to network after the event and ask questions personally to all speakers. It was an extraordinary experience and I await the coordination of our future events!!

MDG Youth Village Exhibition at UN DPI/NGO conference in Australia

Daniel Wiggins, Master's student in Design at Pratt Institute of Design, NY got involved with the Youth subcommittee under Kelly Roberts' Chairmanship for the annual UN Department of Public Information (DPI) Non Government Organizations (NGO) conference held in Australia August 30- Sept 1 2010. One of this year's youth events at the conference was the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Youth Exhibition. This collaborative project involved students from various U.S. and Australian colleges and universities. Together they produced 8 booths (one for each MDG) related to maternal health, poverty, education, child health, HIV/AIDS, environment and global partnerships. Daniel contributed his designs for MDG#5: Maternal health. The photo posted shows him in front of his designs. He was able to get funding and his first passport to travel 20 hours to Australia and got to see his designs become reality and network with other youth! Please read Daniel's blog post below about his experience:

" A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the 63rd annual United Nations DPI/NGO conference in Melbourne, Australia. I spent the summer in Pratt Institute's Design Advocacy course where twelve students created design solutions for NGO's. Many of these solutions were proposals, ideas, and scenarios getting NGOs to see the role design can play in their work. NGOs do amazing work and my role at the conference was to make connections between designers and NGOs, thus creating opportunities for collaboration. Along the lines of collaboration, I was introduced to Kelly Roberts at Fordham University who was organizing a MDG Youth Village exhibition at the conference. I spent the summer learning about maternal health and Kelly needed help designing and planning the creation of these booths. Naturally it was a good pairing and I was so proud of the work we came up with. From New York, Kelly and our team created half of the booths, and helped assemble the entire project on-site upon arrival in Australia. My main project was designing MDG #5 booth: Improving Maternal Health. each booth came out great, and the village ended up being a meeting place for many at the conference. Youth would meet there between workshops and countless others checked out the information during our breaks and meal times. It was an amazing experience working with new groups of inspired people, sharing ideas and having them realized. I got to do that, and much more during the conference. In the coming months, I'm using the experiences I gained at the conference to continue creating places for such collaboration at Pratt Institute in New York. "

As student coordinator of Fordham University's Impact Initiative, the Impact Initiative has opened a lot of windows for me. This Fordham student group created under the Office for International Services, has made for me, along with others involved, aware of the MDGs and many United Nations opportunities such as conferences, events, internships, and serving as a panel member. Firstly, I was grateful to be interviewed and chosen to serve on the Student Advisory Panel for the Second Annual Youth Pre-Conference, in preparation for the 63rd annual United Nations DPI/NGO Conference in Melbourne, Australia, with the theme of Global Health. Through this panel, I was involved in many things. I researched speakers for the preconference, contributed to the welcome letter and mission statement, gave creative input concerning our website, and helped arrange the set-up of the conference. During the pre-conference event I was a rappateur; writing down the main points of each of the guests who spoke that day-to be published on the conference website. This conference enhanced my management skills, social skills, and allowed me to network with my peers and speakers, such as ambassadors and leading youth in the community. Through this conference I met Salwa Kader, president of United Federation for Middle East Peace (USFMEP). As a result of this opportunity meeting, I later was selected to intern for this wonderful NGO. USFMEP is an NGO with consultative status with the United Nations, located at the Church Center. Through this internship, I go to various United Nations conferences, some with the focus on the Middle East. Being a Middle East Studies major, this internship really satisfies my interests. As I am in the process of interning with USFMEP, I hope to gain more United Nations and Middle Eastern knowledge. Currently I'm also serving on the Youth Advisory Council (as a result of being on the preconference youth board) assisting with the planning of an MDG Village Exhibition -8 booths designed by students in the US and Australia- to be displayed in Melbourne during the UN DPI/NGO conference Aug 30- Sep 1, 2010.

I await to see what other opportunities Impact Initiative brings to me, as I hope to reciprocally share some insight with those involved with Impact Initiative!

The global economic crisis has underscored the need for more effective global governance mechanisms for economic policy coordination. The G-20 represents a significant step in that regard. However, for the G-20’s deliberations to be translated into effective actions on a global scale, they will need to be more consultative, inclusive and transparent. In this regard, it should be borne in mind that the United Nations is the only global body with universal participation and unquestioned legitimacy. The G-20 process and its actions and decisions should complement and strengthen the United Nations. What can be done to ensure that the G-20 process strengthens and not undermines the UN? How can we build up a framework of engagement between the G-20 and non G-20 members?

In honor of the UN's Academic Impact Initiative; Fordham University created the Impact Initiative student group at our University run by this office. Our goal in creating this student group was to education people about what the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) are and learn more about them as well as to train and share MDGs information on our campuses. Ms. Sandra Choi; Fordham undergrad shares her experience of being involved with the Impact Initiative and was chosen by the UN's Department of Public Information as an intern July- December 2009.

-"I began my work with the (Academic) Impact Initiative when I learned of Fordham University's opportunity to work directly with the United Nations in support of the Millennium Development Goals. Through the support of the organization, I was able to obtain an internship at the NGO Cluster at UN/DPI. I enjoyed being challenged by the assignments given and learning the personal stories of the activists and my colleagues. Other highlights included attending the UN DPI NGO conference on Disarmament in Mexico City where I had the opportunity to meet Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.The time I spent at the UN allowed me to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the organization's operations as well as how civil society groups were carrying out their vital work around the world. The United Nations University Office at the United Nations, New York
(UNU-ONY) recruits Junior Professional Fellows (JPFs) for two sessions each
year running from August to January, and February to July. The internship
title, "Junior Professional Fellows" reflects the high level of
responsibility and opportunity given to those accepted into this program.

Please note that UNU-ONY Junior Professional Fellows positions require
full-time commitments due to the high level of responsibilities given to
our interns. These are unpaid positions. On the job training and support is
provided throughout the internship.

Opportunity to Intern this summer with the Youth subcommittee organizing the Student Journalism Program for annual United Nations DPI/NGO conference in Mexico City Sept 9-11, 2009

WHO: Two or three interns who can work together as a team

WHERE: based in New York City, although one student may not have to be local

WHAT: To assist as an intern in the planning of the Student Journalism Program to be held at the UN DPI/NGO conference in Mexico City this September.
The Student Journalism Program has been a big success for the past few years since its inception. The program offers a unique opportunity for students worldwide to report at the DPI/NGO conference to be held this September in Mexico City. The conference focuses on the topic of Peace and Disarmament. Students/school programs are sent an announcement, and invited to submit an application. Those who are accepted will be privileged with press credentials to go to the sessions, and then will be required to report about the conference (any aspect of their choice) for their respective media outlet (electronic or print). The Youth subcommittee oversees this student journalism program. This program was originally offered to schools local to the UN headquarters but has been expanded to students worldwide. Students have come from all over the world, including Singapore, Africa, and Europe.

INTERN TASKS:
The internship tasks happen in four stages:
I) INITIAL/IMMEDIATE: Refining already existing lists of schools and programs to contact. Contacting schools worldwide through email, sending out information offering students an opportunity to apply to the Student Journalism Program.
II) ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS: involves keeping records of the applications (making folders of each) and communicating with the students, and vetting their applications with the senior director (to determine acceptances)
III) DURING THE CONFERENCE (if possible to come). Keeping contact with the students
IV) FOLLOW-UP. Making sure the students send in their reports, and sending out certificates to the student reporters who successfully completed the program.

START TIME: Immediate, runs through the summer until after the conference in September.

PLACE: Attend occasional meetings at the UN with the committee coordinators, and attend other meetings amongst the interns to coordinate/implement the notices and receive/process applications. Other communications on computer (to applicants) can be done from home or other place convenient to the intern.

TIME: 2 ½ days a week. However, more intensive at various stages, when preparing the list and sending out the initial call for applications, and then when the applications come in for review.

QUALIFICATIONS: Hard working, responsible, cooperative person with commitment to doing an excellent job who enjoys working in a team and getting the job done; creativity in how to make a project work efficiently; computer literate; interest in communicating with people from other countries and in journalism.

SUPERVISION: by the director of the Student Journalism Program and by the Youth subcommittee who oversee aspects of the student journalism project: Judy Kuriansky, Main Representative for the International Association of Applied Psychology and Kelly Roberts, Sec. Representative for NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Support and direction is available from the previous interns who did such an excellent job.

New Impact Initiative Coordinator

Student International Leadership Program - April 17, 2009

Even though a lot of students RSVP'd to our event and did not show up, the Fordham students who came to the event had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: they visited Brazil's, Cuba's and the U.S. permanent missions to the United Nations.

First, everyone gathered in the basement of The Church of the Holy Family, also known as the United Nations Parish, to hear talks by Sr. Lucianne Siers, OP, Director of the Partnership for Global Justice, and Sr. Eileen Gannon, OP, Executive Director of the International Catholic Organizations Information Center.

Then, the group (Azizi Seixas, Tiago Mitraud, Sandra Choi, Rizzia Froes and me) split: Kelly escorted Azizi and Sandra to Cuba's permanent mission to the United Nations, where they learned more about Cuba's new projects and policies and what kind of work they have been doing towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Tiago, Rizzia and I went to Brazil's permanent mission to the United Nations, where, since we are all Brazilians, we were received in Portuguese and learned more about Brazil's projects to achieve the MDGs.

After this morning session, we went back to the church, where we had lunch with students from other Catholic universities and left again, this time to learn more about the United States permanent mission to the United Nations, and how to get an internship (and, eventually, a job) in the U.S. department of state.

It was a very interesting event, and the students who participated had a unique chance of networking and learning more details about UN-related jobs and the MDGs.

In the coming Fall, we will still be working hard to provide the students interested in out Impact Initiative with more opportunities like this and we look forward to having Fordham being represented by an even larger group of students.

BEFORE WE MEET:

Our event starts promptly at 9:00am in the Church of the Holy Family (the United Nations Parish Church). The address there is: 315 E 47th St (Manhattan, NY), between 1st and 2nd Ave.

Remember: we will NOT meet at Fordham University. We will meet directly at the church, so make your transportation arrangements so that they will allow you to get there before 9:00am.

If you live in the Bronx, there is a Metro-North train leaving the Fordham station at 8:12am, which will arrive at Grand Central Terminal at 8:35am. From Grand Central, it should be a 15-minute walk to the church.

ONCE WE GET THERE:

From 9:00am to about 10:10am we will be at the church, where there will be a talk on the UN and the MDGs.

At 10:30am the Fordham group will visit some nation states' permanent missions to the UN. Fordham students will be divided in 2 groups. One group will visit Brazil's permanent mission to the UN (747 Third Ave., Manhattan, NY), and the other group will visit Costa Rica's permanent mission to the UN (211 East 43rd Street, Manhattan, NY). After the groups are divided, a member of the OIS staff will accompany you to your assigned country's mission (i.e. the group will walk together).

Please let me know asap whether you'd prefer to visiti Brazil's or Costa Rica's permanent mission. We cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to that mission, but we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

At each mission, there will probably be a brief presentation of the country's mission to the UN and some details about how they address the Millennium Development Goals. This will be followed by some time for students to ask questions to the country's representatives. So, we suggest that you do a little bit of research in advance about your chosen country's (Brazil's or Costa Rica's) status and how they address the MDGs (for those of you still unfamiliar with the MDGs, this is a good chance to google them and look them over!).

From 12noon to 1:15pm, there will be a lunch break. Lunch will NOT be provided, so make sure you pack your lunch or bring some lunch money. There are many restaurants/cafes/diners on 2nd and 3rd Ave. near the missions and the Church of the Holy Family, so you can eat at your convenience.

We will meet again at the Church of the Holy Family at 1:15pm and then we will all go to the United States Mission to the UN (140 East 45th Street), where there will be another briefing from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

Non-paid internship positions are available immediately for the 62nd annual United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI)/ NGO conference.

DPI/NGO Relations organizes and coordinates the annual DPI/NGO conference, the premier event for NGOs- to be held this year in Mexico (Sept 2009). This year’s conference theme is related to disarmament. This international forum brings together senior UN system officials, prominent international NGO representatives, public opinion makers and international media to jointly discuss issues of global concern.

The current internships are for the Sub-committees of the annual Conference Planning Committee of New York. These internships rely heavily on the assistance of knowledgeable, diligent, and enthusiastic interns. As such, interns should expect to be included in many aspects of the work of planning the conference.

The following subcommittees looking for interns related to planning the annual UN DPI/NGO conference:
* Committee of Experts- specializing in disarmament (needs help with translations between Mexico & NYC, creating spreadsheets, researching speakers for conference)
* Late Afternoon Workshops (translations, organizing workshops)
* Outreach
* Media & Publicity (help with translations between Mexico & NYC related to media)

The Fordham University Impact Initiative is growing... and now we need a logo!

So, this contest is open to all of you (Fordham students), with or without artistic skills. Create a logo and send it to us!

We will be receiving logo proposals from today (Feb. 23rd) to March 23rd. Then, the OIS staff will choose the logo which best represents our ideas and goals.

The creator of the winning logo will be credited on our website and events and will receive an Amazon gift certificate of US$ 50.

Runners-up can choose to have they art work exhibited during our Spring 2009 on-campus event.

Guidelines:

1. Check http://impactinitiative.blogspot.com to learn a bit more about who we are and what we do.

2. You can create the logo using photography, painting, sculpture... but the final version of the logo must be in an electronic format (.gif, .jpg etc), as it will be used on our website, blog and other publications (in print and online).

3. Size: anything ranging from 300 to 600 ppi (400x400 would be great!). Any size would be fine, but bear in mind that a lot of details would be lost if we had to shrink the image to fit website/flyer space. Shape: anything, really. Color: it would be nice to have some of the Fordham maroon, but this is not mandatory.

4. The logo must not contain other copyrighted images (such as the Fordham logo, the UN logo etc.)

He has held visiting appointments in law at Harvard, Stanford, and Yale Law Schools, and visiting appointments in philosophy at Dartmouth College and the University of Melbourne. Professor Luban has also been a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institutes in Frankfurt and Hamburg, a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship.

His published books include Legal Ethics and Human Dignity (Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Lawyers and Justice: An Ethical Study (Princeton University Press, 1988). Professor Luban has published numerous articles on a wide variety of topics, including legal ethics, legal theory, international criminal law, just war theory, and most recently, U.S. torture policy.

Dear all,

We have been very successful in attracting people to our Friday program. The Lower Hudson Valley Catholic College and University Consortium reserved 100 spaces for the tour and have been advised that we can not exceed that number.

There are too many tours being conducted at that time and there is a personnel shortage. We have approximately 135 registered for the full day on Friday. We spoke to the Tour Office to no avail. A friend of ours, who is a former UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Resources, also tried in our behalf.

As a result we are fortunate to have a briefing scheduled by the Director of the UN Guided Tour Program during the same time the tours will take place.

We know that some of you have already been to the UN several times and have perhaps already had the opportunity to go on a tour, in which case you may be interested in going to that briefing instead.

We will ALL be able to attend the lunch and the afternoon briefing, regardless of your choice for the morning program.

So, what I ask from you now is:

1. a final confirmation on whether you'll be able to attend the program on Friday.

2. if you are definitely coming, let me know if you'd rather go on the tour or attend the above-mentioned briefing before our lunch.

I kindly ask you to let me know by tomorrow 12:00 noon.

Info on our International Education Week Program

Here is the info on our Fall 2008 Program.

Remember this event is open only to those people who have RSVP'd, since we will all need credentials to get in.

1. We will begin our day as we enter through the Visitor's Entrance located on 1st Ave. at 45th St. It's in a tent building. Allow time to pass through security. We will meet by 10:15am in the Visitor's Lobby for sign-in and distribution of UN visitor passes.

The closest subway stations are Grand Central (for the 4, 5, 6 and S lines) and 5th Ave. (7 line). If you live in the Bronx, there are trains (Metro-North) leaving the Fordham Station at 9:16 and 9:38am arriving at Grand Central in time for you to walk to the UN and get there by 10:15am.

2. Our tours will begin at 11:00. We will be guided to another section of the building to begin the tour, which will last approximately 45 minutes. If you want to learn more about this, the UN website has an interesting review of parts of the tour, discussion of the guides and their uniforms etc.: www.un.org/tours

3. The tour will leave us on the 4th floor at the Delegates Dining Room for lunch. Lunch consists of an unlimited international buffet, dessert bar and coffee/tea. Remember we will cover the cost for lunch (including tip). Only juice and soda are extra (i.e., it'll be on you guys, if you choose to have it).
Proper dress is mandatory and individuals who are part of our group will not be admitted if the dress code is not strictly observed. The dress code does not permit jeans, shorts and sneakers, and gentlemen are required to wear jackets.

4. After lunch we will proceed to Conference Room 4. Our panel discussion will be a rich series of presentations and discussions of the Millennium Development Goals with a particular focus on the Eradication of Extreme Poverty. We will begin at 1:15pm.

We would still like to hear more ideas for the Spring program to be held on campus. If you have a different proposal, just e-mail it to us, so we'll brainstorm and try to combine both of them, or see which one is more viable for this Spring.

Our program at will be held on Friday, November 21 (the Friday before Thanksgiving).

There are several confirmed speakers for our afternoon panel at the UN:

- Sr. Marie Elena Dio, a Sister of Charity NGO with experience with international economics and poverty

- Ambassador Paul Badji, Permanent Representative of Senegal to the UN

- and either the Ambassador of Haiti or his senior Conseillere.

The nation-state representatives have been asked to focus on the accomplishments and challenges facing their countries in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the eradication of poverty.

Ideas for the Spring

As we discussed during our meeting last Wednesday, we should plan an event for the Spring 2009.

Jason Welle has already sent me a proposal. He says:

My personal interest is public health, so I would like to propose an event raising awareness of the global effort to fight HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS intersects with other health and development issues including malaria and nutrition/food security, and is one of the primary challenges for development in the world today.

I would like to see an event that not only raises awareness of how issues are affecting the world abroad, but that emphasizes a local connection to broader issues; an event which serves to remind Fordham and our Bronx neighborhood that we are members of a global community. As a Catholic, Jesuit university, this is reflected by the Church’s universal character and the global dimension of the Society of Jesus.

I propose a two-day event at Rose Hill centered on a display of panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt (http://www.aidsquilt.org/index.htm). The display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt serves as a reminder that HIV/AIDS deaths are not just facts and figures, but real people with friends and families. The first day would be a chance for local community members, perhaps coordinated with organizations like Bronx Health REACH (http://www.institute2000.org/bhr/) or Bronx Health Link (http://www.bronxhealthlink.org/), to view the quilt, to contribute panels to the project, and to participate in a memorial service to members of our Bronx community who have died from AIDS. Bronx has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the nation, and there is currently a borough-wide campaign to have every adult tested for HIV (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/ah/bronx_test.shtml). This part of the event could be used to raise awareness of this campaign and to promote HIV testing to the members of our community.

The second day would shift to a more global focus, and may include an appropriate documentary film such as I Am Because We Are (http://www.iambecauseweare.com/), a panel discussion, and/or a presentation by a representative of UNAIDS (http://www.unaids.org/en/).

These are a couple of challenges I foresee:

1) Space to display the Quilt panels—each panel is a 12-foot square, so finding places to display a number of panels on campus could present a challenge. Thinking out of my head, I think the McGinley Hall lobby, University Church, and the library lobby may be places that would work—but we’d need a lot of campus cooperation for that to happen.

2) Access to the university for members of the community not related to Fordham, given the security needs of the Rose Hill campus.

3) Specific approaches of some organizations to combat HIV/AIDS may seem to conflict with the Catholic Church’s preferred approach to solutions, which could present a public relations challenge.

Q&A: DPI/NGO Briefings (how to attend briefings at the UN)

Sandra e-mailed me yesterday about something all of you might be interested in knowing.

Q: When will we be able to start attending the DPI/NGO briefings at the United Nations? I know Sal said that we would need to be escorted by either him or yourself to enter the building or gain the credentials to enter...

A: The briefings are held every Thursday, from 10am to 12pm. As you will be able to see in this link, the full Fall 2008 schedule has not yet been posted. I think we could start the visits by 10/23.

The process is: you look at the link and/or we forward the schedule to you. If you see a topic you are interested in, you will contact us the Monday before your chosen Thursday briefing (e.g: for the briefing on October 23, you should contact us on October 20). We (Kelly) will arrange your credential. On that chosen Thursday we will meet you at the "Security Office" and escort you into the building and to the meeting.

1) Call to order and introductions.

2) Definition of NGOs and DPI, and description of how the Impact Initiative is similar to an NGO, but for Academia (cf. handout).

3) Our project was presented as a cooperation between the Office for International Services (in partnership with the UN) and Fordham University students, so we discussed what students can do for this initiative and what we - at the OIS - can do for you, students, namely:
- have you attend briefings in the UN headquarters;
- put you in touch with people in other schools which are also part of the Lower Hudson Valley Catholic Colleges & Universities Consortium and who are developing similar projects;
- have you participate in the International Education Week (November 17-21);
- give you a chance to meet people who for for the UN;
- give you the possibility to attend the annual DPI/NGO conference next year in Mexico City.

3) What we expect you to do in return is engage in projects which aim at increasing awareness of the MDGs and human security (cf. handout: article in The Chronicle Review: "Can 'Human Security' Solve the World's Problems?"). We are open to your ideas/suggestions as to what such projects should be, as long as we have at least one program for the Spring 2009. In the long run, we will develop bigger projects, such as "adopt a village".

4) We ask you all to keep us posted about any Fordham-related UN events, so that we can forward it to all of our students and encourage them to attend.

5) We mentioned the creation of this Blog (which is already working!) and possibly a Facebook group to help us get in touch and find out the latest news on the Impact Initiative.

6) We asked all of you who attended the meeting to try and recuit more people, so we can have a more effective impact with people working in two big fronts: Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.

7) We do not intend to have many meeting like the one we had yesterday. Like we mentioned, our goal is to try to keep in touch online as much as possible (via e-mail or Blog), so as to avoid conflicts of schedule.

Kick-Off Meeting

The Impact Initiative held its first meeting today at 2pm in the McGinley Center Music Room.

We were very happy to see participants - undergraduate and graduate students - from both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses.

At this first meeting, Mr. Salvatore Longarino, director of the Office for International Services, and I presented a little bit of the history of this project and talked about its goals, as well as how you, Fordham Students, can help us help you!

In order to keep this project going, we count on everyone's suggestions and ideas. Remember we will try to plan on how to achieve our goals online, via this blog or e-mail, just to make it easier for both Rose Hill and Lincoln Center students.
